After the incomparable success of Colin McRae DiRT in 2007, the public was waiting for a sequel, and not just a sequel, but a sequel. I wanted more, higher, further. The sequel came out 2 years later and "more, higher, further" did not work. If we compare Colin McRae DiRT 2 with its predecessor, then the novelty can be described in one word - castrate. Yes, it's sad, but the former violence has been replaced by crisis moderation. The single-player campaign tells the story of a novice racer and his path to the racing Olympus. It's difficult to come up with something new here, and is it worth it? . . An interesting fact is that the game features a large number of real racers such as Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra, Ken Block, Kate Justice and others. The most famous of them give the player software in between races. All game tracks are located in nine regions (there are only 7 countries, as there are 3 tracks in the USA), which are opening gradually. There are noticeably fewer racing modes: ring road, raid (sprint with small forks), Last Man Standing, Domination (to win, you need to show the best time on certain sections of the track) and Gate Crasher (you need to replenish your time reserve by knocking down foam gates placed all over the track). In addition to the usual races, there are several tournaments: 3 rounds of the X Games, as well as European, Asian and American tournaments, as in Need for Speed: Shift.
The car fleet has decreased significantly, which, of course, is sad. Forget about trucks, subcompacts, buggies with huge wings and much more. Now we have about 30 cars at our disposal (buggies, jeeps and rally cars), among which Mitsubishi and Subaru are clearly in the lead (let me remind you that there were fifty cars in the previous game).
But three dozen is also a lot, considering that their behavior on the highway is almost identical to each other. There is minimal difference in driving and on different road surfaces. The world is probably going crazy.: Codemasters turns the Colin McRae Rally series into a SEGA Rally-type arcade game, and the Need for Speed line becomes a realistic racing simulator. All this leads to the fact that the entire gameplay of Colin McRae DiRT 2 has become cloying arcade. And the flashback system, which became the most controversial innovation of the previous part, also makes the game very easy. Why start the race all over again, if you catch yourself in time, you can always "rewind" the wrong moment and replay it again.
Graphics, which revolutionized in 2007, have not changed visually today. Codemasters are very proud to support the latest DirectX 11, but in practice there is absolutely no difference. Only thanks to special trailers can you find out that the support of the newest package of graphics libraries allows you to display a much larger number of polygons in a frame. You can't see it with the naked eye. The situation is about the same with physics: it has not changed. The sound of powerful engines in Colin McRae DiRT 2 is more like the hysterical screech of a kitchen blender running at maximum speed.
The result is somewhat sadder than we would like. Instead of a mind-blowing sequel, we got a nice addition, but no more. Colin McRae DiRT 2 is inferior to its predecessor in everything, so what's the point of spending money on it if you already have the previous installment?
